Mastercard Developers is the one front door for all of Mastercard’s API products & services. It is a marketplace for over 100 APIs, providing access to Mastercard’s broad range of services over the web. Under Donal’s strategic plan to improve the consistency and quality of these services, the platform saw a 64% increase in its Net Promotor Score (NPS) thanks to improved tooling, an award winning developer experience, and an API-first design mantra.

Mastercard works with a vast range of vendors and merchants to build loyalty and rewards campaigns, offering benefits to customers for using their Mastercard. Donal identified an opportunity to automate and worked with 5 different teams in 2023 to introduce a reusable app and process to do so. This saved over 1 month of lost productivity each year for all 5 teams.

During his Msc in Digital Innovation Donal learned about design thinking, anthropology and data analytics. He used his new knowledge in a combined manner to being a bespoke process to the Mastercard labs team that was quicker to gather real world feedback and ensure prioritised features had a genuine impact for customers.

Donal will always look for opportunities to step outside his comfort zone and, when joining Mastercard’s mobile development team, he took on a leadership role where he introduced a unique bespoke process based on learnings from researching how Pixar cultivate and nurture a culture of creativity.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s research and development arm needed to be able to utilise mobile native development in order to create apps using the latest features. However, HPE hadn’t invested in hiring engineers with the experience needed, so, Donal identified a way to use his knowledge to quickly up-skill their knowledge via a scalable learning curriculum.
